The Joanne Genoza Podcast was born on a hot afternoon in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The air was thick with summer heat, the kind that clings to your skin and slows your breath. I was sitting at my dining table, the grain of the wood warm under my fingertips, my body cradled by a simple wooden chair. In my left hand, an iPhone.
Outside, the world had gone still. Flights were grounded. The three-to-five trips a month that once kept my passport ink-fresh were now a memory that felt like another lifetime.
There was a current moving through me a flood of messages pressing against my ribs, rising into my throat. Words I knew weren’t mine to keep. They require to travel, to land in the heart of someone I might never meet.
So I pressed record.
No microphone, no sound engineer, no polished studio. Just me, my breath, and the steady courage to let the message matter more than my imperfect grammar. The first episode was unedited and raw my voice steady, my English fractured in places, but my intention unwavering. I decided that day: perfection would never be my gatekeeper.
